When we were little, my best friend Marizela and I were inseparable. We did pretty much everything together...until one day during the Bosnian war, when she and her family disappeared in the middle of the night. I looked for her for 20 years with no luck. And then, out of nowhere, she showed up on Facebook! I think I cried for a whole day when I received a message from her. I couldn’t believe it. After two decades and nearly giving up, the universe reminded me just how wonderful and surprising this life can be.
This photograph of me and Marizela was taken at my first art showing. We were about 7 years old, wearing sweaters that our mothers had knit for us. After my mother died, I became obsessed with my handmade yellow cable knit sweater. It reminded me of her small hands and her giant, loving embrace.
These bobble knit, super-soft Italian wool sweaters are inspired by—and dedicated to—Marizela and my mother. Hand-knit by Bosnian women, they are the result of my collaboration with Udruzene, a Sarajevo-based organization that employs women who are survivors of the war. They also represent the fulfillment of my decades-long dream of helping Bosnian women support themselves. I am so excited to share my dream with you.
